Toronto is a city in the province of Ontario, one of the 13 provinces in Canada. Just northwest beginning on the shores of Lake Ontario, Toronto is the main source of business, arts, finance, and culture in all of Canada.
Marine Corps 0311
Because of this, Toronto is the largest city in Canada with a population of just under 6 million people. With so many people from different backgrounds and ethnicities, Toronto is known as one of the most cultured cities in the world. English is the main language amongst the people, but with an estimated 200 different ethnic origins and 160 different dialects, english is not the only language that is understood here. The city itself consists of giant skyscrapers and buildings filled with businesses and apartment complexes. With Toronto being the largest city in Canada, it is no wonder why the city is filled with so many different people and the main source of broadcasting throughout the entire continent of Canada. Many television programs, news, and other media outlets come from the city as well as a large variety of history museums, festivals, and sport arenas.
It is also the headquarters to the 5 largest banks in Canada. Toronto even has around 25 million tourists each year. Much like the United States, before the Europeans invaded to take over the land, the native people of what now is Toronto were Indian tribes. The particular tribe was the Iroquois. Before the Iroquois, there were the Wyandot people.
The Wyandot people, also known as the Huron Nation consisted of roughly 30,000 others within the tribes. This tribe died out around the 17th century due to an epidemic plague and disease that wiped them out.
It was around this time the Iroquois tribe stumbled upon the land and dying tribe. The Iroquois then for the most part, completely wiped out the Huron, Wyandot people, making the land their own. During this time the Iroquois established two villages within the land they took over. From the 1660’s, to right at the beginning of the 1700’s, these villages were in use. Once the 1700’s rolled around however, the villages were abandoned and even destroyed due to many wars that the shores of Toronto faced. One war in particular was the Beaver Wars.
The Beaver Wars consisted of mostly trading in through the river systems and the canal-ways. The rivers and lakes were great in helping to transport and trade goods from one continent to another. In this case, it was the French and the tribes that were settled on the shore of Toronto that had back and forth quarrels. The Huron tribes were getting their furs from their allies the northern Algonquins and the French. This is when a battle of economic welfare broke out amongst tribes. The Iroquois needed that fur and the trading system the Hurons had so they dominated the Huron tribe and all of the tribes surrounding the area.
The Iroquois took over so many regions that it is considered to be one of the most harsh and brutal, violent wars fought at the time. They finally became defeated during the French and Indian War in which they fought over the waterways and channels that were sought after for centuries. This land was now known as York.
The battle of York was now in pursuit as part of the War of 1812. United States soldiers ransacked the entire town of York and burnt down many of their parliament buildings.
Once all was said and done, the land was then changed back to its former name, Toronto (derived from the Indian name Tkaronto meaning ‘place where trees stand in water’). This was in the 1830’s, as Toronto’s population grew to a population of around 9,000, many of these people immigrants by being slaves who escaped to seek refuge.
By 1840, slavery in Toronto and upper Canada was completely abolished and illegal, former slaves were even able to open their own businesses in the area. As time excelled, the population of Canada, especially in the Toronto region, expanded immensely. Many of the immigrants this time were from Ireland during the time of the Great Irish Famine. During this time is when the city really began to take shape. By the 19th century, the people of the city began creating railroads, sewage systems, lighting for the road powered by gas lighting. Developing the railways and trains also brought in a surge of immigrants now that it was easier to access transportation from one side of the continent to other parts of the region and the north American continent.
Since then, Toronto has had its upbringings and downfalls, but now is a very successful city and a highly travelled to destination. The climate of Toronto is like many places.
It suffers harsh winters but makes up for itself in the hot months of the summer. The climate in Toronto is known as a humid continental climate. This basically means that the city has a climate that can fluctuate greatly. From hot summer days, to freezing cold winter nights, the climate has control and power over many aspects of the city. Since not many tourists enjoy traveling during the winter months, most of Toronto’s tourist population comes out around the hot summer months. Some of the main tourist locations in Toronto consist of history museums, art galleries, cultural museums, and the Toronto zoo which has over 5,000 animals and more than 460 different animal species.
There are also many different sporting events one could attend while visiting the city of Toronto. Since Canada is known for its exceptional hockey skills, it is no surprise that the city is home to some of the best hockey players and teams in the world. Even though the NBA, National Basketball Association, is mainly in the United States, the Toronto basketball team the Toronto Raptors, are the cities very own basketball team that competes with the U.S teams making them the only Canadian basketball team to compete with American teams. Toronto being such a large city has one of the best transportation systems in the world. With such an easy way to make it from point A to point B in the city, using these public transportation systems has made Toronto an even greater city to visit while on vacation since those visiting will most likely not have a car for transportation. Toronto, Ontario has a rich tattoo history.
Featuring shops such as FY Ink Tattoos and Piercings, Chronic Ink Tattoos, New Tribe Piercing & Tattooing, Speakeasy Tattoo, and Yonge Street Tattoos, Toronto is a great destination if you’re looking for some new ink. With a population of around 2.5 million, there are lots of potential customers for the parlors in town.
Yelp currently lists 103 different shops when searching for “tattoo” in Toronto. Google Places lists 609 different tattoo shops in the Toronto area, which shows how competitive the city truly is.
Adrenaline Body Piercing & Tattoos currently boasts one of the best selection of artists in the area, featuring Joey Nixon, Martin Blais, Kevin Yateman, Kindra Berdar, Tyler Mansey, Cordero Winterger, Jane Godfrey, Sara Stinchcombe, Lukie Duke, Colin Farquharson, and Andrew Stewart. When doing research for your artist, we suggest not paying too much attention to price because quality is much more important when you’re going to be living with the artwork for the rest of your life.
By: - at June 4, 2013 Most Common Tattoo Designs and their Meanings Before Getting Inked The acceptance of tattoos has been on a steady rise with society embracing this type of body art as a form of individual expression. Despite its popularity now, it has not always enjoyed the kind of limelight it owns today. People from the previous generation regarded tattooing to be connotative, and thus quite unacceptable. Deciding to get inked may be caused by different factors. For some, it is an expression of one’s spiritual views and for others, a symbol of pride for one’s heritage. Generally, they are drawn on the skin to convey messages the tattooed person wants to express.
This can range from signs of harmony, strength, and love. Additionally, tattoos are used to communicate meanings permanently.
The exquisite designs display messages without the need for verbal expressions. Inspiration, appreciation, expressions and even misfortunes can be expressed by a tattoo on one’s arm or chest. It is essential that before deciding on a tattoo design, one has fully understood the meanings associated with it. Remember that the moment you get inked, it becomes an almost permanent statement. Designs and their Meanings Often, people get tattoos as a reminder of someone special. For many, it is one way to display respect for others, an important reminder that should not be forgotten. A name of a very important person that made an impact on someone’s life can be the most popular form.
Additionally, it can be symbols or abstracts that symbolize a certain memory with that special person. Men and women are known to love an angel design which they may choose to cover their backs. Preferences for color of this design may depend on the meaning the person having this might want to convey. There are countless designs to choose from for a tattoo. It is important to know that choosing just about anything is not a very good idea as every specific design has a meaning in association. Here are the most common tattoo designs and their meanings: Anchor Tattoo Meaning: Originally used by people involved in the business associated with the sea, the anchor is most often the design loved by sailors, navy, seamen, and other workers always out in the deep blue sea.
With the popularity it continues to enjoy, it can now be seen inked on the arms of the rock stars, and even women. Popular meanings include safety, salvation and hope. Bat Tattoo Meaning: Originally connected with Native American Indians, it has long been misunderstood to depict fear. This however, has been considered by the natives as a sign of honor. Being a highly sensitive creature, it is believed to help in the performance of duties by shamans and traditional healers. Because of the bat’s ability to see through the dark, a tattoo of this design would mean seeing the truth. Modern society considers it a design that means intuition, objectivity, and journey.
Chain Tattoo Meaning: Widely used as a design that can take the place of a bracelet, necklace or anklet, it is one of the most popular designs chosen by both men and women. Chain tattoos are powerful images that symbolize freedom and bondage.
When broken, it means freedom and being relieved from a burden. When connected, it conveys the meaning of being unable to do what was wanted, being enslaved, or imprisoned- physically or emotionally.
Meanings range from freedom, slavery, and connections like marriage and friendship. Meaning of the Cross Tattoo: One of the most popular designs, a cross tattoo does not necessarily mean devotion to a single religion. Perhaps its popularity came from the fact that it has different meanings to many people. A variety of this is the Celtic cross with designs that include a knot or loop symbolizing the never-ending circle of life as the belief of the Celtic tribe of Europe. In Christianity a cross symbolizes the cruel way Jesus Christ died as a sacrifice.
Its most known meanings include love, salvation and sacrifice. Dove Tattoo Meaning: An iconic symbol of peace, dove tattoo designs symbolizes end of conflict.
It can be traced back to ancient Romans and Greeks, this design, especially when coupled with a branch of olive, represents the Eriene, the goddess of peace and harmony. It is also an expression of loyalty to Aphrodite, goddess of love and fertility. Alternately, it represents the connection of man to the Holy Spirit and the visions of hope. When the design is a pair of doves, it symbolizes marriage or union. Generally, it means peace, love and the Holy Spirit. Meaning of the Dragon Tattoo: The most popular symbol in Asia, the dragons is a symbol of power, being the ultimate messenger of psychic powers from nature. Originating from the Chinese belief, this creature is the most powerful symbol of wealth and prosperity.
Additionally, it depicts continued success and achievement. In Japan, however, dragons are common characters in stories that explain the complicated nature of humans. It is believed that dragons carry messages pertaining to the feelings of the people. The popular meanings of this tattoo design include strength, power, and ruler of the elements of the earth. Eagle Tattoo Meaning: One of the designs that gained popularity even before the acceptance of tattoos, the eagle signifies different meanings. In the ancient period, it is closely related to the Greek god Zeus, thus, making it a symbol of power. In the modern society, it is common among those in the military, police officers and firefighters.
For them, it represents love for their country. Being the king of the sky, this tattoo design represents strength, loyalty, honor and even spiritual growth. Meaning of the Heart Tattoo: Comes in a variety of designs, styles, and colors, this tattoo design is popular on the wrist, chest, or hip. Though its meaning varies from person to person, it generally symbolizes love and adoration. When one has a bleeding heart as a tattoo, it could represent a love that’s lost. When it is broken, it represents a most treasured relationship that failed, rejected love or loss of a loved one.
A heart pierced with arrows or swords tend to depict messages that are unforgettable and painful memories of love. With the heart being the engine of the human body, this tattoo represents passion, love, friendship, and adoration. Lotus Tattoo Meaning: The second most popular flower tattoo design, the lotus is considered the most important flower in some parts of the world. This may be because of the religious symbolism it carries. For the Hindus, it is where the god Braham was born; in the same manner that Egyptians believe it represents the sun god, Ra. Because it thrives in muddy areas, it is known to mean surviving the hardships and struggles. Additionally, it represents beautiful transformation coupled with strength.
Quite similar to the heart, it represents love, passion, beauty and strength. Rose Tattoo Meaning: One of the most popular tattoo designs in the world, this carries a rich range of meanings. Being an epitome of beauty, the rose has irresistible fragrance and charm.
With its beauty come the thorns which mean there is no easy way to being beautiful. When paired with a heart, or inked in bunch, it would mean love. When tattooed with diamonds, it symbolizes wealth.
As with the meaning of the lotus flower, rose could also depict fertility. Most commonly, people choose a rose for a tattoo to signify love, beauty and fertility. Star Tattoo Meaning: Just like the ordinary way we view stars, tattoos of this design says something about ambition, aims, and inspiration.
For many, stars are the tattoo choice for those who wanted to permanently commemorate a great achievement in life. When tattooed with shooting stars, it means unforgettable moments that created great impressions in life. When it is a nautical star, it tells about guides and directions that helped achieve goals.
This would also mean that the person will never get off track. When it is a pentagram or five-point star, the one pointing upward signifies balance but the one pointing downward means love for the dark spirits.
The Star of David signifies humanity and balance in the world. If it is a nonogram, it means stability and achievement of goals. It is often associated with powers. Generally, a star tattoo could depict unforgettable events, inspiration, belief, and direction. Meaning of the Sword Tattoo: Generally connected with masculinity, bravery and strength, the sword symbolizes purification.
It tells about the cleansing of the human soul, metaphorically, to be freed from bondage. As a symbol traditionally associated with men, it might as well say something about war and power. In Buddhism, the sword is the symbol of a mind that can spot right from wrong, thus, making it a symbol of ending ignorance. People who had this as a tattoo design might as well want to emphasize the importance of justice and honor.
Yin Yang Tattoo Meaning: Based on Chinese philosophy that opposites attract, this design would also mean the two types of forces present in the universe. It means that both the elements of light and darkness are needed to achieve harmony.
The colors represent the male and the female, the light and the shadow, and heaven and earth, etc. It depicts the message that one cannot be balanced without the other, and it is an expression of spirituality. Generally, people with this kind of tattoo would love to exhibit their belief in harmony and totality and. Yin Yang also means peace to a lot of people. Final Inking Thoughts People who have a deep understanding of tattoos know that each design or line drawn on the skin represents what’s in the soul.
Originally being used as an important part of culture, tattoos represent one’s rites of passage and symbolized status, as well as rank and membership amongst their culture. It is also a traditional way of expressing love, fertility, penalties, and decorations for a warrior’s bravery. With tattoos being a permanent expression of individuality, one has to know the meaning of the designs before getting inked. We hope this will give you some insight into creating your own tattoo ideas or designs and that you’ll be able to make an informed decision about which flowers you decide to have tattooed on you and their meaning. Lotus Tattoos: These are among the most popular flower tattoos not just for what they symbolize, but for the cultures to which they are tied. The lotus represents knowledge, understanding, enlightenment, and life. The meaning of lotus tattoos goes a lot deeper.
So much deeper, in fact, that we had to give it a dedicated page. If you want to learn more about the history and meaning of lotus tattoos, read up on our. Cherry Blossom Tattoos: The cherry blossom tattoo is common in Japanese style tattooing. Often depicted as falling petals being carried by the wind, the cherry blossom reflects a vary unique trait of Japanese culture. They call it “Mono no aware” – the pathos of things, or more literally, an empathy towards things. Another way to put it would be to say “a sensitivity toward ephemera”.
What does that mean? The cherry blossoms are quite beautiful and delicate, but are not in bloom long. The blossoms are blown from the trees with the slightest wind.
This means that their beauty fades rapidly. The Japanese people see this as a metaphor for life which echoes their own mortality. For a better understanding of the significance of the cherry blossom tattoo,. In tattoo art, the cherry blossom represents the fleetingness of life and of beauty, as well as representing mortality, life, and beauty themselves. The blossoms are often depicted as being carried away by wind or water.
It is also common to see the blossoms represented as whole, or just the petals. Of all the flower tattoos we’ll discuss, the cherry blossom is the smallest. Chrysanthemum or Mum Tattoos: This is another particularly popular flower tattoo that is most commonly associated with Japanese art. In Japan, the chrysanthemum is associated with royalty–namely the emperor, who sits on what the Japanese have titled the Chrysanthemum Throne. It represents perfection and, in some interpretations, deity. The chrysanthemum is also symbolic of happiness or joy, as well as longevity. In China, the Chrysanthemum is associated with Taoism and represents simplicity and perfection.
Due to the fact that it blooms in autumn, there is also a symbolic representation of transitioning from life to death, or being between life and death. In Chinese culture, the chrysanthemum is given in congratulations, good will, or wishes for long life. Rose Tattoos: The rose tattoo is another popular flower tattoo. While it is less common in Eastern tattoo art, the rose tattoo is a staple of traditional American tattoo culture. The rose tattoo is generally regarded as meaning love, or beauty, due to these same qualities being associated with the flower itself. But the rose tattoo has much deeper meaning and a very long history in tattoo art.
The rose tattoo is also believed to mean balance, symbolize an undying love, hope, and new beginnings. Adding the stem with thorns can provide additional, contrasting meaning such as defense, loss, and thoughtlessness. Peony Tattoos: The peony flower tattoo is another common staple of the Japanese style of tattooing. In Japan, they are referred to as the “King of Flowers”. This flower tattoo symbolizes elegance and wealth. Though often colored red in tattoo art, the peony tattoo can be a wide range of colors.
Orchid Tattoos: The orchid holds a broad range of meaning in numerous cultures. To the Japanese, the orchid was said to represent bravery to warriors. It’s associated with power and strength in ancient Aztec culture. In China, the meaning of the orchid flower is tied to prosperity, fertility, and refinement. The best part of orchid flower tattoos is the sheer number of options. There are over 25,000 kinds of orchid flowers, which means that your odds of finding one that suits your purpose may be easier (or harder) than you might expect. Keep in mind that the meaning of an orchid flower tattoo can be tied to the type of orchid you choose and the part of the world in which that orchid naturally grows because the meaning is usually defined by the culture that lives closest to the flower.
Hibiscus Flower Tattoos: The hibiscus flower is another popular flower tattoo. In Japanese culture the hibiscus flower has one of the simplest meanings of all flowers in Japan. It holds just a singular meaning: gentle. In Hawaiian culture the hibiscus flower symbolizes royalty, power, and respect. Often worn by the old kings and queens of the Hawaiian islands, the hibiscus became associated with the ruling class.
The hibiscus flower tattoo can simultaneously hold all of these meanings, but interpretations can be influenced by the context of the tattoo. For example, a hibiscus appearing in a Japanese sleeve would be more likely to be considered to mean “gentle”, rather than power or respect. A hibiscus tattoo that stands alone may have a less restrictive interpretation of its meaning. Lily Tattoos: The lily is a popular flower worldwide and appears in many cultures for many purposes.
For this reason, it has some of the most varied meaning of any flower tattoo. The meaning of lilies is traced back to ancient Greece and the Madonna lily, a white lily native to the area.
They believed it sprang from the milk of Hera, Queen of the Gods. For that reason the lily in Greece was understood to represent the Divine Feminine. It also commonly means virtue, perfection, and purity. Compassion, understanding, and mourning are also associated with lily flowers. A lily flower tattoo can be completely open to interpretation, or, if you choose, other design elements can help assign the flower to a culture to direct the meaning of the lily flower tattoo to something you specific wish to symbolize.
Poppy Flower Tattoos: Poppies are another flower that grow in all different parts of the world. Despite this, and unlike other flowers with broad geographic origins, the poppy flower does not have a widely varied meaning. Its meaning is surprisingly limited. In the Greek and Roman tradition, the poppy flower is associated with death in the form of eternal sleep. Sleep is a universal meaning for the poppy flower, but it can also mean peace.

This meaning comes from the poem by John McCrae, a WWII era poem about the war and those lost to it. Dogwood Flower Tattoo: The meaning of the dogwood flower varies from culture to culture. A commonly accepted meaning of dogwood flower tattoos is “love undiminished by adversity”, meaning the wearer’s love can withstand anything.
Dogwood flowers are often confused with cherry blossoms in tattoo art due to their striking resemblance to one another. By Charles Berger @ Heroes & Ghosts Richmond, VA Another traditionally accepted meaning of the dogwood flower is pity or empathy. This stems from Christian folklore. The story goes that the dogwood once was a large tree like an oak tree and as such, it was the tree chosen to make the cross on which Jesus was crucified. The dogwood didn’t want this to happen and felt great pity for Jesus. As a reward, God made the dogwood grow small so that it couldn’t be used for such a cruel act ever again.
The dogwood can also symbolize rebirth, or rejuvenation, as it blooms in the spring. Other Flower Meaning Resources:: this site addresses the meaning of colors, numbers, and individual flowers.
